Dreams of Tungsten
04:48
|
|||
There's a little girl in pigtails and she's maybe three or four.
Her Daddy's brought her to the cape to watch the rocket soar.
They rose early that morning, as they'd often done before,
And today's the day they'll hear the rocket roar.
Hear the roar and see the Saturn soar.
And she doesn't dream of unicorns nor dream of fairy wings,
Or elves or trolls or fairy tales or other fancy things.
No, she's building dreams of tungsten and of nickel alloyed steel,
Of composite fiber and gold plated wire; she's building dreams for real.
Now the little girl has grown up and she's never been a fool.
She's the brightest gal they've ever seen at the Engineering School.
And she's learned about materials and cryogenic fuel,
And she's mastered every mathematic tool.
Learned the tools so she can break the rules.
No she doesn't dream of dances, or such romantic things.
She will storm the gates of heaven on force and fire wings.
She's building dreams of tungsten and of nickel alloyed steel,
Of composite fiber and gold plated wire; she's building dreams for real.
She watched with renewed wonder, as the shuttles broke the sky
Cheered for every space launch, 'til she watched a shuttle die,
And she waited two whole years before another ship would fly
And today's the day she swore she wouldn't cry
(when) She watched the sky, and saw another die.
And she dreams of soaring through the black without a single fear,
And of fantasies where management might heed the engineers.
She's building dreams of tungsten and of nickel alloyed steel
Of composite fiber and gold plated wire; she's building dreams for real.
And the little girl in pigtails, she still believes hardcore
She still believes in space, but not in NASA anymore.
And she rose early this morning, as she's often done before
Today's the day she'll see her rocket soar.
Hear the roar and see her rocket soar.
She has dreamed of steel and tungsten, and forged them into wings
And spun a fiber aeroshell, and heard the engine sing...
'Cause you can build your dreams from tungsten; you can build your dreams from steel.
Use composite fiber or recycled tires, but build those dreams for real.

Fog
04:22
|
|||
On deep patrol where stars are thin, and ports are far and few.
And it takes 10 years at the speed of light to get a signal through.
We fight the foe and beat him back, and who knows when they'll next attack.
And we're on our own far from friend and home... and it's lonely in the black
Shine your boots, and drill till dawn, and keep your laser clean
The next battle might be Bull Run or it might be New Orleans
We may have won, we may have lost, treaties signed years ago.
With the light speed lag, if peace broke out, it'd be years before we'd know.
I signed on board 4 years ago or so it seems to me
But 40 years on my homewold's gone, that's relativity.
And half your friends are old and dead, or perhaps they have been nuked instead,
So you find some way to get thought the day, and to the next battle ahead
Shine your boots, and drill till dawn, and keep your laser clean
The next battle might be Bull Run or it might be New Orleans
We may have won, we may have lost, treaties signed years ago.
With the light speed lag, if peace broke out, it'd be years before we'd know.
A ship appears upon our screens and we blast him clean from space,
Then a second ship breaks for the deep and the captain yells "give chase",
And the bow beams burn and the men give cheer, that's the forth damn ship we've killed this year
And we still don't know if we've beat the foe; we can only persevere.
Shine your boots, and drill till dawn, and keep your laser clean
The next battle might be Bull Run; it might be New Orleans
We may have won, we may have lost, treaties signed years ago.
With the light speed lag, if peace broke out, it'd be years before we'd know.
[Bridge]
So we roam our ship from star to star
And we fight the bastards where they are
And we bomb their planets from afar...
Amid the fog of the unknown.
The only universal truth is war is always hell
But the light speed lag, means we fight cross time, and the great unknown as well
And I hope some day we'll find we've won, though we'll have to live with what we've done,
Till then we'll fight, deep in the night, or by an alien sun.
(So) Shine your boots, and drill till dawn, and keep your laser clean
The next battle might be Bull Run ; it might be New Orleans
We may have won, we may have lost, treaties signed years ago.
With the light speed lags, if peace broke out, it'd be years before we'd know.
With the light speed lags, if peace broke out, it'd be years before we'd know.
I sure would like to know.

The Undiscovered Country
03:16
|
|||
They say the future's the undiscovered country
They say tomorrow is a land you never can explore.
But what's past that next hill? Well, that's the call of human will,
Every day to know more than before.
Grab yourself a walking stick, and see what you can find,
or ponder in your rectitude the secrets of the mind.
there's always something new out there, beyond the marker signs
beyond the maps and past the border lines.
There's always something new beyond the ridge line
there's always something new to see just on the other side
They say the future's the undiscovered country
They say tomorrow is a land you never can explore
But what's past that next hill? Well, that's the call of human will
and every day we know more than before.
The maps that read "there's dragons here" have faded all away
The dark and unknown places, no longer hold their sway
Nowhere new left to explore, but we need to anyway
a new adventure for a brand new day
There's always something new beyond the skyline
there's always something new to see up and out that way
(fin)
So call the future the undiscovered country,
you never know quite what she'll bring she hasn't brought before.
For the call of human will, is to seek beyond each hill,
and find new things we never have explored.
Oh we need a new frontier - somewhere beyond this sphere
Exploring where we've never been before.
To find a place we've never gone before...

Sojourner
05:02
|
|||
Roll on Sojourner, roll on
Roll on Sojourner, roll on
See an ancient world with new made eyes
'Neath the deep red unforgiving skies
Where many a probe has gone to die...
Roll on Sojourner, roll on
They said she'd never make it, said she was bound to fail,
That faster, better, cheaper, was no way to set your sail.
But she proved her critics roundly wrong on distant foreign shores
Exploring where no one had gone before
So roll on...
They say there's a Sargasso Sea, about the planet Mars.
Where half the ships have disappeared, lost forever 'midst the stars
But Pathfinder survived the shoals, and landed safe and sound
And Sojourner was shortly on the ground.
So roll on...
A little thing, like a cartoon, that's only made for laughs,
But she measured Martian minerals with her spectroradiograph
And she was meant to work for just one month, but you know she lasted three
Amidst the blowing dusty sandy seas
So roll on...
Now her mission might be over, but her Spirit still lives on,
When we take the Opportunity to view the Martian dawn.
And every new Mars mission, like a Phoenix from the flame,
Is a tribute to the little ship we named...
Roll on...

Silent Thunder
04:33
|
|||
Silent Thunder, rising in the dawn,
Seeking new worlds, to put our footsteps on.
Silent Thunder, headin' for the Stars
Took the Thunder - Tamed it - Made it ours.
When you look into the sky, tell me what do you see?
Do you see the moons and stars? Do you dream of Delta-V?
Are you waiting for the evening star, to set a wish upon,
Or contented, to just keep, keeping on?
Old newton knew the secret. he put it in his book,
Laws of motion for the learning, just had to take a look.
Action begets reaction, and force begets a force,
So to soar into the ether, you just need a power source.
-(chorus)-
First we flew on winged craft, to dance with clouds so high
Then we built great rocket ships to fly above the sky
But rockets based on chemistry, barely have Isp
To break free, from Earthly gravity.
But Einstein knew the secret. He told us where to go,
You have to go much smaller, to free the power flow
And now we've cracked the atom, to power all our dreams
And when you are deep in space, you can't hear the rocket scream.
-(chorus)-
Bridge:
So now, we're finally Outward Bound,
where the thunder of our fusion flame – doesn't make a sound.
-(Fin chorus)-
Took the Thunder - Tamed it - Made it ours.

6. |

From the very first, we walked upon the earth
Saw the eagle soaring high above.
Stuck upon the ground, in chains and shackles bound.
Envious of both the hawk and dove.
And we dreamed... to soar on high
on flesh and fire wings - to climb and fly
every story told, daring to be bold.
A dream of unfettered skies
And the stories that we shared, around the fire's light
or the pages of the books we passed around
The ones that grip the soul, the ones that did extol
No more, be trapped upon the ground.
And we dreamed... to soar on high
on flesh and fire wings - to climb and fly
Daedalus's son, who rose to touch the sun.
Dreaming of unfettered skies.
Wings that never tire, of steel and force and fire
rising from the coast against the dawn.
Seeking a new world, explorer's flag unfurled.
Hope and name from myth and legend drawn
And we dreamed... to soar on high
on flesh and fire wings - to clime and fly
Landing on the Moon, Ending far too soon.
A dream of unfettered skies.
So Sing of brothers Wright, first taking to the air.
Or Pegasus, that Perseus did tame.
Or Dragons over Pern, Rising every Turn.
Our souls, the Dream of Flight holds claim
And we dreamed... to soar on high
on flesh and fire wings - to climb and fly
Steamships of the air, or Dragons everywhere,
Dreaming of unfettered skies
We all dream... to soar on high
on flesh and fire wings - to climb and fly
Soaring to the stars; breaking through the bars
We dream of unfettered skies.

The Spirit of Space
04:20
|
|||
In the dawn of time we walked the land, and named each thing we found.
And found within the living world, the spirits did abound.
The trees, the rocks, the waterfall, the zephyr's quiet sigh.
But the greatest spirit was the evening sky.
We learned to fear the ocean - fear the spirit of the gale
For men are made of flesh and bone, our ships were awful frail
But amidst the toil and danger, at the ending of the day
The stars above would always point the way.
And the Spirit of Space is calling out to me
Forget the rocks, forget the stream, forget the mighty trees
Come live among the asteroids, and the mountains flying free
The Spirit of Space calls out to me
Yes the Spirit of Space is calling me.
The spirit of the river says: that time is never still
And the spirit of the desert: she'll test your very will
The mountains promise wisdom - far older than this land
But the arching sky calls "don't you understand?"
The ground beneath your footsteps, that's not the place to be,
Your home is high above you, amidst the Starry Sea
Where the solar wind's a blowin' and energy is free
And you can dance in microgravity...
-chorus-
No cradle lasts forever, though it's spirits may abide,
And ebb and flow along the way, like the spirit of the tide
But for each and every spirit, that has helped this human race
The strongest spirit rules Eternal Space
-fin chorus-
And the Spirit of Space is calling out to me
Forget the rocks, forget the stream, forget those silly trees
Go live among the asteroids, and mountains flying free
The Spirit of Space calls out to me
Yes the Spirit of Space is calling me.
Yes the Spirit of Space.... wants company..

A Can of Air
03:28
|
|||
Buddy,
Can you spare a can of air,
My gauge is getting lower,
Soon I'll no longer care.
And time, waits for no man,
And it looks like I won't be coming home.
I've set the homing beacon to disaster,
but it looks like I'm very much alone.
Simple, easy journey
prospecting for ice, nothing new,
found a vein that looked to be of promise,
and I don't know how the air line blew.
And Buddy,
Can you spare a can of air,
My gauge is getting lower,
Soon I'll no longer care.
It's fixed, I'm still breathing,
don't know how long that will last.
driving this rover fast as I can manage,
sure hope someone hears this broadcast.
Miners live in danger
On the Earth, the asteroids or moon.
my vision is growing dimmer,
hope to God someone finds me soon
And Buddy,
Can you spare a can of air,
My gauge is getting lower,
Soon I'll no longer care.
Is anyone there?

And we roamed...
yes we roamed....
Beneath the Fire...
And... the Stone
Come sit beside my fire, and tell me distant tales
what lies beyond that mountain, what lies beyond the dale
Come lay aside your burden, and sit beside the flame
circle of darkness banished, a place where night is tamed.
Beside my fire....
And the stars stood high above us, like sparks to heaven flown
and the earth was hard below us, the unforgiving stone
But the game had fell before us, for our aim was straight and true
And we told the ancient stories, as mankind's wont to do.
Beside the fire...
-chorus-
Soon the people grew and prospered, and they tilled the earth below
Explored and found new wonders, wherever they did go
And the earth gave up her secrets, iron yielding from the stone,
and they worked with ore and alloy, expanding what was known
forged in fire
And with steel they forged empires, with steel made endless war.
And the people wept with anguish, for they knew they could be more
And the stars stood mute in judgment, as stars are known to do.
So with new resolve they prospered, and from the world they flew
Birthed in fire
-chorus-
Now we sail from world to worldlet, as we trade between the stones
We've tamed the fusion fire, it's secrets now we own,
Yet we still recall the dawning, whatever our travails.
So sit beside my fire, and tell me distant tales.
Around the fire.
And we Roam
yes we Roam
Beneath the Fire....
Beneath the Fire...
Between the Fire...
And... the stone.

Bound... No More
03:52
|
|||
Once above the land they say the rockets did not fly
And men were forced to walk the Earth 'neath the empty aching sky
And bound upon the ground, they would live, they'd love, they'd die.
--But we're bound to the ground no more.
They saw the stars above them and heard the siren call
And a vision of a future that would the mind enthrall
To reach beyond the heavens they would dare to risk it all.
--To be bound to the ground no more
Midst the desert's burning sand where hawks and eagles soar
The rocket men grew restless for to hear the rocket roar.
Like Icarus of legend they would dare like none before
--And be bound to the ground no more
Bridge 1:
Look away, look on high
Look far above the sky
There's a fortune there,
High above the air.
Once Continents divided, the great seas lay uncrossed
And brave were they who dared the land, the oceans, heat, and frost.
The winds of time blow bitter, but some must dare the cost
--To be bound to the ground no more.
Bridge 2:
So, call forth the engineers - let the bird fly
We're gonna light up the engine and light up the sky
See her jets burning -- see her leap high.
Light up the engine and light up the sky
They looked into the future and oh what did they see
They saw the rockets leapin' high free from gravity
An' mankind leave the cradle in a future flying free...
--Bound to the ground no more.
--Bound to the ground no more.
--Bound to the ground...
Once above the land they say the rockets did not fly...

Fifty Years
03:49
|
|||
Do you remember - where you were that fateful day?
Do you recall now - how we said we're there to stay?
Red white and blue - blazing so proud against the grey.
Returned in triumph - then threw it all away.
50 years... since those footprints in the dust.
50 years... they rode nine-million pounds of thrust.
50 years.... we set our dreams aside to rust.
50 years... broken dreams and broken trust.
Do you remember - when the future was foretold?
Do you recall when - we were willing to be bold?
The first footsteps - we thought were a foothold.
When we were fearless - against the dark and cold.
50 years... since those first footprints in the dust
50 years... she made nine-million pounds of thrust
50 years.... and nothing's left but rust
50 years... broken promises and trust
Let me remind you - we held tomorrow in our hands.
It was a new day - amidst the rubble and the sand.
That brilliant sky road - leading outward to new lands.
When the future - It was ours, ours to command.
50 years... there's still footprints in the dust
50 years... looks like the future's been a bust
50 years.... of tears, despair, and rust
50 years... broken dreams ... broken trust
(and) Do you remember.. where you were that fateful day?

That Glory Road
01:58
|
|||
There are men who dare the rockets,
That dare to break the sky
Those who dared the oceans
Those who first learned to fly
And we would not be where we are,
Save for those who dared to try....
... But the Glory Road is paved in blood and bone.
The desert's sanctified by souls
who flying fell to ground,
The seas are likewise hallowed,
Where storm and shoal have drowned,
There's ten who fell along the way
for each victor laurel crowned...
...And the Glory Road is paved in blood and bone.
So raise you glass on high my friend,
for those who died today,
And a toast to each and every one
who died along the way,
Another toast to anyone
Bound to try anyway...
...That Glory Road that's paved in blood and bone.
The price we pay is flesh & blood & bone.

No One Home
03:06
|
|||
Luna's rising above the hills
The sight should warm my heart
And then I remember how we failed
And gave up at the start.
For there's no one home
Diana's all alone
Harnessed the power - just one goal
Of a nation brave and bold.
Set footsteps on distant foreign seas
Until our will grew cold.
And there's no one home
Diana's all alone
Luna's Rising above the clouds
Just like each night before
Fifty years, and a fading dream
We're still stuck on the shore
For there's no one home
Diana's still alone
Some day surely we will return
(at) Peary or Shackleton
Water there for living off the land
Constant power from the sun...
But for now, there's no one home
Diana's sleeps alone
There's no one home...

Mriya Farewell
03:00
|
|||
Chorus:
--Mriya Farewell,
--The spirit of a Dream
--Mriya Farewell
--An aviation Queen
--Mriya Farewell.
Born amidst the cold war, reaching for the stars
Transport for a space-plane that never got that far.
And History has not been kind to Buran as you know,
But you survived and prospered ever so.
--Chorus
One of a kind, no other quite like you,
Hauling special cargo, that no one else could do,
Reborn like a Phoenix from the ashes of empire,
Symbol of a New Dawn, soaring higher
--Chorus
And now your days are ended, by a madman seeking war.
Of hubris and vainglory, the whole world would ignore.
Your people are besieged, fighting in the streets.
Ignore history... you find that it repeats.
--Chorus

Last
05:24
|
|||
Remember the 60's those long heady days,
we thought that the future was moments away...
We never expected that once we had won..
We'd set it behind us and say we were done.
Armstrong and Aldrin, the first to set down,
A single small step that was watched the world 'round
But do you remember, it happened so fast..
That Neil was the first, but Gene was the last.
Armstrong and Aldrin, Conrad and Bean,
Shepherd and Mitchell were living the dream.
Scott, Irwin, Young, Duke,
Cernan and Schmitt,
That's every last person who journeyed that trip.
A hot Navy pilot he flew the A-4
with five thousand hours in the air, maybe more
On Gemini 9 he performed EVA,
And only by will did he carry the day.
But he didn't die, he rejoined the crew,
And on Tenth Apollo the lander he flew,
Imagine the heartbreak to see it so near
The grey lunar rubble, that rocky bleak frontier.
Armstrong and Aldrin, everyone knows,
And poor Michael Collins who got so damn close.
But who remembers,
Cernan and Schmitt?
The very last people to journey that trip.
So Neil was the first, to step on Selene
And somehow they lived on Apollo Thirteen.
And when the last of Apollo did land.
Gene finally stepped on that grey lunar sand.
(Break fingerpick bridge)
I'll always feel sorry for Eugene Ceranan,
The last man to walk on the moon,
A singular honor he'd rather not own,
But I don't think we're going back soon.
(strum)
Maybe some day we will try it again,
This time to stay with brave women and men
Until then, remember, if you wouldn't mind.
Poor Eugene Cernan, the last of his kind
Armstrong and Aldrin, heroes of yore,
Doing something never been done before.
But I would honor,
Cernan and Schmitt,
The very last people to journey that trip.
The last of 12 people to journey that trip.

Sixteen Minutes
02:21
|

16 minutes from home. And the board is looking green
16 minutes from home. And the danger's still unseen
Radar trace says she's right on track
Coming home now out of the black
Once you commit, there's no going back...
16 minutes from home.
Just 16 minutes from home
---
16 minutes from home, and the weather's looking great
16 minutes to home, where we all will celebrate.
Bearing eastward and homeward bound
Families waiting down on the ground
A sight that never ceases to astound...
16 minutes from home.
Just 16 minutes from home
---
16 minutes from home. When the alarm began to blare
16 minutes from home. They didn't have a prayer.
A leading edge that was compromised
Fire blazing across the skies
Just seconds of warning - before they died...
16 minutes from home.
Just 16 minutes from home
---
16 minutes from home - so close... yet so far
16 minutes from home - they died to touch the stars
16 minutes from home
16 minutes from home
16 minutes from home
16 minutes from home
Just 16 minutes from home.

Beyond the Harbor
03:26
|
|||
They laid her up - in Boston town
With oak from the new world ground
Fifty guns set - On two Gun decks
And of English ships - she made five wrecks.
Freedom's Cry heard the whole world round!
And she may have been safe in the harbor.
Might have been safe in the harbor,
Could have stayed safe in the harbor
But that's not what a ship is for
CV-2 known as Lady Lex
Eighty aircraft and a wooden flight deck
Fought Bravely at the Coral Sea
In a struggle to make the whole world Free
A battle that echoed the whole world round.
And she may have been safe in the harbor.
(Ok, it wasn't that safe in the harbor)
Could have stayed safe in the harbor
But that's not what a ship is for
Born 'midst the sand and Joshua Trees
A thunder on the ocean Breeze
Engines alight - her tenth space flight
Seven souls lost in the morning light...
And People grieved the whole world round...
And she may have been safe in the harbor.
Might have been safe in the harbor,
Could have stayed safe in the harbor
But that's not what a ship is for
We have fed our sea for a thousand years
we've Mourned our dead, shed our tears
Space is cold - unforgiving I'm told
But there's always someone who'll dare to be bold.
We'll build a foot hold; we'll stand our ground.
And it may be it's safe in the harbor.
We might be safer in the harbor.
We won't stay safe in the Harbor.
That's not what ships are for.
We're sailing beyond the Harbor...
That's what ships are for!

Wings of Fire
03:19
|
|||
All of us have dreamed of Flying Dragons.
Every one of us has dreamed of flying high.
And of leather beating wings,
And other fancy things,
To soar above this Earth and rule the Skies.
All of us have dreamed of flying free
Past this Earth and through the Galaxy
Yet I'm stuck upon the ground
fettered, caged, and bound
With the sky calling achingly to me.
Chorus
And Dragons are not real - so they say
But I've seen the evidence belie today
For she rose on wings of Fire
Like the dreams that she inspired
And she soared above the Earth to break the Sky
For today there was a dream out of a Legend,
A story we will pass down through the years
A Falcon flying free
A dream that's meant to be
Cast aside your doubts, despair, and fears
All of us have dreamed of Flying Dragons.
In the saddle, hopes and dreams flying high.
Leather and fire wings,
Steeds of Queens and Kings
Soaring past this Earth to rule the Skies.
And Dragons are not real - so they say
But I've seen the evidence belie today
For she rose on wings of Fire
Like the dreams that she inspired
And she soared above the Earth to break the Sky
And Dragons... are real - we proved today

Daughter of Apollo
04:34
|
|||
It's Time - to light that flame again
It's Time - to say "remember when?"
It's Time - to Dare Great Things Again...
It's Time. It's well past time...
Time waits on no man...
The great machines lay rusting on the grass
A monument to dreams - that simply could not last.
The Glory of Apollo - molders in the past...
But now our time has come, has come at last.
(And)
It's Time - to spread our wings and fly
It's Time - to dare, to dream, to try.
It's Time - to journey past the sky
It's Time. It's well past time...
Time waits on no man...
Now Artemis stands waiting for her turn.
The Daughter of a Space Shuttle with Apollo's heart reborn
Fifty years of waiting - she couldn't come too soon,
A long arduous journey, but she's aiming for the moon.
It's Time - to raise our head up high.
It's Time - to go where Dragons Fly
It's Time - to question How, not Why!
It's Time. It's well past time...
Time waits on no man...
So it's time to return bravely and to stay.
To honor all the pioneers, who fell along the way.
Cast off broken promises; their time has come and gone,
The future's, waiting brightly come the dawn!
(And)
It's Time - to light that flame again.
It's Time - to count backwards from Ten.
It's Time - to dare things once again...
It's Time. It's well past time...
Time waits on no man.
It's Time...decades past time...
Time waits for no man...
